Planning your Charleston Proposal
So now that you have the ring, it’s time to start planning the perfect Charleston proposal! Charleston is a growing coastal city with a vibrant food scene and historic charm. Whether you’re a local, or a tourist visiting for vacation, Charleston has some of the best proposal spots in South Carolina for your milestone occasion.
Under the Angel Oak Tree on Johns Island
If you want a spot with historical significance, this one’s for you. According to charleston-sc.gov, the Angel Oak Tree is the “largest live oak tree east of the Mississippi.” With sprawling branches and roots, it creates a whimsical and romantic backdrop for popping the question. Note that a permit is required for photoshoots, so if you’re planning to hire a photographer make sure you apply for a permit enough in advance! Find more information here.

On a Rowboat in Cypress Gardens (A.K.A. the notebook spot)
What’s more romantic than The Notebook? This iconic spot is a swamp with breathtaking trees, lily pads, and birds milling about. Rent a rowboat and pop the question while on the water, or take a stroll across one of the park’s historic wooden bridges and get down on one knee there.
This is a popular spot, so if you want the proposal to be more secluded, we recommend visiting during off-peak hours in the morning or on a weekday during the fall or spring. Additionally, the swamp can get humid so make sure to pick a day that won’t be too hot!

Next to the Pineapple Fountain at Sunset
Another iconic spot, the Pineapple Fountain is located at Riley Waterfront Park in the French Quarter. This backdrop is playful and memorable, with the sculptural design of the fountain standing out boldly along the coastline. Since this is a more touristy spot, we’d recommend visiting during non-peak season/hours to allow for a more intimate Charleston proposal!

In Front of the Pink House at Rainbow Row (Iconic Charleston)
If you’re looking for a colorful proposal, there is no better spot than along Rainbow Row in the French Quarter. The houses were first built in the 1700s, and they became an official historical landmark in 1931. If you and your partner met in Charleston, and want a spot that stands true to the iconic city, then this location is perfect for you. Pro tip: match the color of the house you propose at to your partner’s favorite color.
There are also a bunch of amazing dinner spots nearby to celebrate your engagement. A few of our favorites are Magnolias, The Peacock (which also has a private event space if you want to host a surprise party after), and The Crossing (for a more upscale engagement celebration).

With a Mossy Backdrop at Hampton Park
Nothing screams whimsy more than a mossy oak tree. Plan your intimate proposal within one of Charleston’s largest city parks. Pop the big question over a quiet picnic, or plan a surprise party with all your friends and family at the gazebo (which you can rent out here).

Strolling Pitt Street Bridge at Sunset
Not only does the Pitt Street Bridge have breathtaking views, it also holds historical significance: it used to be the only route connecting Mount Pleasant to Sullivans Island. The bridge is now a walking trail, where visitors can stop and fish, or stop and propose *wink wink*. Sunrise or sunset is definitely the peak time to visit this spot so make sure to plan your proposal accordingly!

In Front of ‘The American Theater’ on King Street
Another ‘The Notebook’ spot, The American Theater allows you to reserve the marquee outside for personalized text. If you’re looking for a statement proposal, then you can’t get any more dramatic than this! We recommend planning your proposal at night to really make the most of the lights and to minimize foot traffic around you.

On the Beach at Sullivan’s Island
Anywhere you propose on Sullivan’s Island will make for a stunning Charleston proposal. With sandy dunes, and a gorgeous coastline, you really can’t go wrong with anywhere along this beach to get down on one knee. Bonus points if you have champagne ready to pop after your partner says yes, so that you can celebrate as you watch the sunset together.

Shem Creek Boardwalk
A proposal that may include a dolphin sighting is a win in our books. Shem Creek is a picturesque spot with many local bars and restaurants lining the boardwalk. Propose on the bridge at sunset, or book a private catamaran for a romantic sunset cruise for you and your partner. We recommend enjoying dinner at Tavern & Table after to make it a whole night!

Philadelphia Alley (an homage to our roots)
Philadelphia Alley is a hidden gem located in the French Quarter. It was given its official name in 1952, largely speculated to be in part due to Philadelphia residents helping to rebuild the street after fires sadly destroyed it. Interestingly enough, it was also a popular spot to host literal duels between individuals at feud. A spot with this must character is definitely proposal-worthy in our books.
