About Men's Gold Wedding Bands

If you’re thinking about gold for your wedding ring, here’s what you need to know.

14K Gold vs 18K Gold.

The amount of gold in any piece of jewelry is measured in karats, and pure gold is measured as 24K. Gold is a soft metal and in its purest form, it’s not strong enough to be used as a wedding ring. Because pure gold is so soft, it requires the strength of other, less flexible metals such as zinc and copper to increase its durability. Therefore, an 18K gold wedding ring contains about 75% pure gold (18/24) while a 14K gold wedding band contains about 58% (14/24) pure gold.
While 18K gold (less pure gold, more alloy metal) can be okay for everyday wear, 14K gold (a little less gold and a little more alloy) is generally recommended for wedding bands, especially for those who are hard on their hands. This is why we primarily sell and promote our 14K gold wedding bands. However, if you desire to purchase 18K gold (sometimes more desirable for those with metal allergies), all of our gold wedding bands come in both 14K and 18K for final purchase. Pricing does vary, so please contact us for help with the purchase of your 18K gold wedding band.

White vs. Yellow vs. Rose Gold.

Pure gold is naturally yellow in color. Because gold wedding bands are an alloy of gold and other stronger metals, depending on the material, they can change the natural yellow gold color to a soft white or rose. White gold is an alloy of yellow gold and silvery metals like palladium, manganese, and nickel. White gold is a popular choice amongst grooms as it provides the silver color that many men desire, only its more affordable than platinum. However, its important to know that white gold is not hypoallergenic, so it is not recommended for those with sensitive skin. Additionally, it tends to be a bit higher maintenance than both yellow gold and platinum as it will need to be re-dipped from time to time to maintain its white color.
Also known as red or pink gold, rose gold wedding bands have a vintage feel but are also a popular modern choice. Rose gold men’s wedding bands are the strongest of the three gold color choices due to the addition of copper. Rose gold will still scratch with everyday wear and tear, but if you notice the rose gold color beginning to dull, it’s easy enough to revive the shine with a clean cloth. Similar to white gold, rose gold is also not hypoallergenic, so if you are looking for a gold ring that is hypoallergenic and low maintenance, yellow gold or platinum is best.

Gold Wedding Ring Care.

You don’t need any special tools or chemicals to bring your gold wedding band back to its natural sheen.
  • Step 1: In a bowl, mix mild dish soap and lukewarm water.
  • Step 2: Let your ring soak for about 20-30 minutes.
  • Step 3: Rinse off the soapy residue with water.
  • Step 4: Use a lint-free cloth to dry and polish your ring.

Gold Wedding Ring Pros and Cons.

With so many metals available for men’s wedding bands, it can be hard to decide on which one best suits you and your lifestyle. When compared to more contemporary metals, like Tungsten and Platinum, Gold wedding bands hold their own. We’ve broken it down for you to make the decision easier.
Pros:
  • Gold wedding bands are traditional and timeless.
  • Gold wedding bands are suitable for everyday wear.
  • Gold rings can be customized with finishes and engraving.
  • Gold rings are available in yellow, white and rose gold.
  • Gold (white) looks very similar to platinum.
  • Gold wedding rings are easy to repair and resize.
  • Gold rings hold their value and often increase in value.
Cons:
  • Because gold wedding bands are an alloy of pure gold and other metals, they are not hypoallergenic.
  • Gold scratches rather easily, so if you are looking for a ring that will stay “perfect” it’s not the best choice.
  • Rhodium, a common coating, may have to be reapplied every couple of years to boost its former sheen.
  • Gold isn’t as durable as some other contemporary metals, like tungsten and titanium.

White Gold vs Platinum.

White gold and platinum look remarkably similar, as both provide the silver look that is often desired by men. In terms of color, white gold has a warm, yellow undertone while platinum has a cool, grey undertone. While color is something to think about, we do not recommend using it as a deciding factor when choosing between white gold and platinum as there are other differences that are more important to consider, such as weight, composition and price. As mentioned, white gold is an alloy of more durable metals like nickel, zinc, and copper which makes white gold slightly more scratch-resistant and also more affordable. However, unlike platinum wedding bands, white gold is not hypoallergenic and not recommended for those with sensitive skin. It is also more maintenance than platinum as overtime the natural yellow color of gold will start to show. Platinum contain between 95%-98% pure platinum, making platinum wedding rings completely hypoallergenic, low maintenance, but also more expensive.
Choose a white gold wedding band if you are looking for a more affordable jewelry option. Gold wedding bands can be resized to suit changes in your finger size over time. And while white gold is less durable than platinum, it is more scratch resistant. White gold may show its natural yellow color under the rhodium plating, so it may have to be re-coated after some time. Choose platinum if you have sensitive skin - platinum wedding bands are hypoallergenic. If you’re fine with the higher price tag, platinum does hold a certain prestige, as it is rarer than gold. If you’re looking for something with a little more heft and weight, a platinum wedding band is a great choice. Platinum does scratch easily, and your ring may need more frequent polishing than a white gold wedding band.
